Vaccine Politics on the International Level

On Modi’s birthday (September 17th), India celebrated by vaccinating 20 crore people. However, the joy was short-lived, as other countries, such as the United Kingdom, continue to invalidate those who have been vaccinated.

UK has recognised Covishield as a vaccine as it is a licensed product of a UK company. Furthermore, the vaccine certificates issued in India have been refused recognition. This means that Indians visiting the UK will be placed in quarantine for ten days.

This has sparked tensions between the two countries, with India describing it as a “Discriminatory Practice” and threatening reciprocal actions.

Who has the UK Approved?

  • AstraZeneca,
  • Covishield,
  • Vaxzevria,
  • Moderna Takeda.

Which Countries have been Cleared for the Green List?

The UK has cleared a total of 18 countries including Denmark, Canada, Antigua, Bermuda and more. These countries have been allowed to fly to the UK without any quarantine requirements as they have low case rates, few emerging variants, high vaccine rates and access to genomic testing.

India on the other hand is on the Amber Countries list – Need to Quarantine and take COVID-19 Tests.

What Other Countries take on Covishield?

  • Covishield only India-made Vaccine cleared for Travel to the US.
  • The Indian-manufactured Covishield vaccine is most widely recognised within the EU (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Netherlands, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland)
  • Afghanistan, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Barbados, Bhutan Bolivia (multinational state), Botswana, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Canada, Côte d’Ivoire, Dominica, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Granada, Honduras, Hungary, Jamaica, Lebanon, Maldives, Morocco, Myanmar, Namibia, Nepal, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Seychelles, Solomon Islands, Somalia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Suriname, The Bahamas, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Ukraine – Approved Covishield.

WHO Approved vaccines:

Only seven vaccines have been approved for use by the World Health Organization (WHO):

Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech, Johnson & Johnson, Oxford-AstraZeneca, Covishield (an Oxford-AstraZeneca product), and Sinopharm and Sinovac from China are among these companies.

Covaxin – Not Good Enough

Made-in-India, Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin does not qualify because it has not been approved by the WHO or the US FDA (has been twice rejected).

So, my question is – What should a person who has been successfully injected with Covaxin do? Covaxin, as far as I’m aware, is only valid in India. Should I be injected with Covishield, Sputnik, or Moderna again?

My other Question is – PM Modi has been successfully injected with Covaxin, and as a Prime Minister, he is permitted to travel to America. What about others, given that Covaxin has been rejected twice by the US FDA

So, the people who took Desi Vaccine (Covaxin), Stay in Desh!
